Mascara Should Be Changed How Often?!

4 min

Ladies, let’s talk about how often you should be changing your mascara 👀.

No matter where you fall on the spectrum of makeup usage, most of us have at least one trusty tube of mascara tucked away in our makeup bag. So answer me this: how long has it been there?

There are many reasons you might hold onto our mascara longer than you should: maybe you wait until Mom gifts you the little bonus pack of samples that comes with her favorite lotion from Macy’s at Christmas time – yikes! Maybe you just continue to scrape by on the last bit because you forget to get more when you’re out running errands. Or maybe that bigger, pricier tube of mascara by your favorite brand still seems to keep doing the trick just fine after a few months. Why should you have to spend more money on a new one?💰

No matter what has been keeping you from routinely changing your mascara, it may be the perfect time to start this new healthy habit.

Confidence, Motivation, Normalcy

In the times of COVID-19, wearing makeup can contribute to confidence, motivation, and a sense of normalcy.

Over the last few months our lives have changed dramatically. We have either been stuck at home, or we have to wear a mask every time we leave. In either case, our eyes are still expose. They are the focal point of your beautiful face!

Unless you are working from home, chances are you have had to wear a face mask at work 5 days a week since April. It’s difficult to breathe and to talk to people, but the biggest struggle is the awkward smile to others that they can’t even see because half of your face is covered! By now, you have probably mastered the Tyra Banks “smize” (aka smiling with your eyes). The smize is much easier to pull off when you take a minute to brush a little eyeshadow on your lids and mascara on your lashes – take it from an expert!

FDA Recommendations

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends discarding your mascara 3 months after purchase.

Yes, 3 months. You read that right! 😲

Don’t worry, this rule is not for all of your cosmetics. The FDA reasons that the shelf life for eye-area products is shorter than others because of repeated microbial exposure with each use by the consumer and risk of eye infections. In addition, you should toss your eye makeup if you get an infection, and make sure you do not introduce germs by adding saliva or water to your mascara. You can read more about Using Cosmetics Safely on The FDA website.

Help Animals Everywhere

We don’t know about you, but we adore animals. Did you know that MANY well-known beauty brands still test on animals (we’re not naming any names but you can find them on Peta’s website)? When you go with a natural mascara, always be sure you choose one that’s also cruelty-free like The Best Little Mascara Ever which is also vegan, gluten free, paraben free, beeswax free and paraffin free!

New Products

Even when you take care of your products and change them routinely, be aware of how new cosmetics are affecting you.

We may have different responses to different types of products, which is why it is important to read your makeup labels and pay attention to any negative reactions you experience. There are hundreds of options for mascaras alone. Beware, some of them are made with harmful chemicals, and some are even counterfeited!

There is an intriguing Netflix documentary episode (we promise it’s not boring) of Broken. The episode, called ‘Makeup Mayhem,’ showed how “influencer hype and scarcity marketing create conditions where counterfeit makeup thrives, tainted with bacteria, lead, arsenic – and worse.”

These counterfeit makeup producers cheaply copy the look of popular cosmetics and sell them at crazy low prices compared to the real thing. Then, unknowingly, regular people purchase a fake Kylie Jenner Lip Kit or other popular products that are out of stock, and oftentimes causes a terrible reaction like gluing your eyes or lips shut!

It is importation to do a little extra research when you are buying from websites you are unfamiliar with, especially during this time when online shopping from home is so tempting!
