The Perfect Lashes

At My Little Mascara Club, we recommend our clean cosmetics formula for the Best Little Mascara Ever as the healthiest option for your eyelashes, but let’s also look at the pros and cons of some other common techniques to achieve the lash look that you want.

Lash Growing Serum

Eyelash growing serum is one of the newest up-an-coming trends we’ll be taking a look at today. It’s used to catalyze the lengthening and thickening of your real lashes by conditioning them, fighting the decline of aging and brittle hair, and anchoring your eyelashes to you follicles so that they stay in longer. This Consumer Review on How to Pick a Lash and Brow Enhancer that Works outlines some of the most important qualities to look for in an eyelash growing serum including:

  • Patented ingredients- they should be scientifically tested
  • Higher percentage of active ingredients- 2% is standard, but the formulas with 8-10% active ingredients are usually more effective
  • No alcohol, parabens, or fragrance
  • Established manufacturer- look for a company with a good reputation
  • Creams that include a synergistic blend of herbs and natural botanicals

There are many reviews and recommendations of lash growing serums that work and are safe. Taking into account the whole product and its reviews is important before deciding whether you should use a new serum near your eyes – and as we have mentioned before, pay close attention to how the serum affects you. If you have any sort of negative reaction, stop use immediately and monitor your healing.

Mascara (Regular and Waterproof)

Mascara is the most common way to add length, volume, and definition to your eyelashes. This particular trend goes back to 4000 BC and the ancient Egyptians wearing kohl on their eyes to ward off evil spirits and protect their souls. However, we have come a long way from using poisons (aka lead and antimony) on our eyes.

Commercial brand mascaras are made of a mixture of dark pigments, oils, waxes and other supporting components to create the desired coating of lashes. Some of those “supporting components” may include chemical preservatives to make your mascara last longer – beware of the potential negative effects of these preservatives. Additionally, waterproof mascaras have the added component of water absorbance that can make your lashes brittle and more prone to falling out.

On the bright side, My Little Mascara Club launched the Best Little Mascara Ever this year! Our fearless leader Christie Kerner spent countless hours testing common brands and assessing the costs and benefits of each. From there she was able to work with manufacturers to create this Length + Definition Formula made of 90% natural ingredients and entirely cruelty-free! And what’s more, it comes in the perfect little tube so that no product goes to waste. The wand is shorter and fits the shape of your eyelash for better coverage and control. Also, it doesn’t clump and stays put throughout your longest days. We love it and so will you!

Falsies (Glue and Magnetic)

By “falsies” we are referring to the fake eyelashes that traditionally are glued to the base of your lashes to enhance your eyes. Usually they are only used for special occasions. This is most likely because they don’t create the most natural look. They also have to be removed and reapplied every day you want to use them – that cost can add up if it’s used as a daily look.

The adhesive glue often must be purchased separately from the extension strips, and you have to be cautious about potential allergies or eye infections. Sometimes it can be hard to apply the lashes to looks the same on both sides…BUT, remember they are great if you are going for a bold look with minimal impact on your real lashes. They are super noticeable in pictures. Lastly, you can reuse them a few times so you get the most out of your investment.

A new product we can’t wait to hear more about is magnetic falsies. Some versions come with a magnetic eyeliner to stick the lashes to, whereas others have top and bottom strips that use a magnet to sandwich your lashes in a natural way. It is still common to use mascara with falsies though.

Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are similar to falsies, but it takes a license professional to glue extensions to each individual lash to get the look you want. It seems to come highly recommended by people who have tried it and can afford to maintain the habit. Let’s look at the pros and cons, shall we?

PROS:

  • They last several weeks
  • Minimal upkeep
  • No mascara required

*As a side note, it is recommended that you don’t use mascara with eyelash extensions. If you do, consult with your Lash Technician first and be extra gentle with your makeup removal. You could take out some of your extensions by rubbing your eyes in the wrong way. This article on Eyelash Extensions for Beginners has some great advice for how to take care of eyelash extensions if you decide that is the move for you.

CONS:

  • Requires a licensed professional and a chunk of time to get them done
  • Significantly more expensive than other techniques discussed
  • Can cause harmful reactions if you don’t do your research
  • Habits of plucking or rubbing eyes can damage the lashes
